CI2 is supporting the development of the CA Water platform to address the rapidly increasing water and sanitation demands in Vietnam. The CA Water platform will include strategically located water supply and distribution projects that are developed in a phased approach, which offers flexibility for incorporating sanitation projects in the future as well.

As part of the first phase, CI2 and will fund the development, construction and operation of the following greenfield water supply and distribution projects being sponsored by CA Water JSC:

  • Thuy Nguyen Project (10,000 m3 day water treatment and distribution project in Thuy Nguyen District, Hai Phong City, Vietnam).
  • Phu Binh Project (15,000 m3/day water treatment and distribution project in Phu Binh District, Thai Nguyen Province, Vietnam).

Funding Objective

The CA Water Platform presents an attractive opportunity for CI2 to contribute to solutions for Vietnam’s water crisis and support the country’s economic development. The country’s overall fast paced economic development also supports the business case of water investment in term of higher household income and willingness to pay. This opportunity positively impacts social economic developments and has clear climate change adaptation benefits. Furthermore, the projects fit within the mandate of CI2 – Clean Water Supply Project with a Rio Marker score of “2” for Climate Change Adaptation.

Why Climate Investor Two Wants to Invest in This Project

Vietnam’s strong economic growth combined with the infrastructural and development shortfalls, create significant demand for water infrastructure investment. CI2’s investment in the CA Water platform aims to address these challenges and support Vietnam’s evolving water and sanitation needs.

The Projects will provide a clean drinking water to the end users in the respective service areas (including household/commercial/industrial) and measures will also be implemented and monitored during operations to ensure that the water supply is sustainable and reliable.

E&S Context

The environmental and social risk (“E&S”) of the Phu Binh and Thuy Nguyen projects have been classified as Category B (in accordance with CI2’s risk categorisation) which is equivalent to International Finance Corporation (IFC) Category B. Adverse E&S risks and/or impacts are limited, generally site-specific and largely reversible which can be effectively managed in line with available international standards. The E&S risk categorisation of other projects under the CA Water Platform will be subject to further E&S studies.
